The Scoring phase of the “Storms” Contest is past. These are the entries that rose to the top- now it’s time for YOU to pick your favorite from the entries. But first- please read the important rule changes below!

Remember this one? We launched this Caption Contest six weeks ago- then abruptly suspended it. Why? Um, the Colorado wildfires started raging across that state only a couple of days after we launched. So we suspended that particular contest out of sensitivity to the crisis. (Yes, that means we’re not entirely cynical and heartless, after all. Sue us.)
But you’ve waited long enough- and certainly have complained more than enough. So here begins the miserable Scoring phase of the contest- where you, our loyal Despairers, deliberately subject yourself to a non-stop assault on your intelligence in the hopes of finding an occasional chuckle or even rarer guffaw in the process.
Remember- don’t give high scores to entries that use quotes or jokes you’ve already heard. The last contest for “Lion & Lioness” was invalidated because the winning entry was actually a joke from comedian Jeff Dunham. We try to eliminate those entries before Semi-Finalist voting- but we can’t always catch everything. Save your highest scores for quotes that feel original, that perfectly pay off the startling photograph, and that might actually be a useful bit of wisdom worth invoking in future circumstances.
Alright- get started!

It had to happen sooner or later.
Only minutes after Despair declared a winner in the “Lion & Lioness” Caption Contest, we began receiving email and Facebook notes informing us that winning caption in the contest was, in fact, reworking a familiar joke from a Jeff Dunham comedy routine. Read More!

The voting in the Despair.com ”Lion & Lioness” semi-finals round is over- and the winner has been chosen by a massive margin!

The voting in the Despair.com ”Raft” semi-finals round is finally over- with a near tie. But in the end, “Teambuilding” bested “Teamwork” by a 9% margin to secure the victory!
The winning entry, “Teambuilding – Sometimes the most important lesson you can learn is that you’re not a very good team”, was a note-perfect payoff to this especially evocative photo. It had the matter-of-fact assurance and universal applicability of a canonical Demotivator- which is about as nice a compliment as we can give it. (Though to be honest, many of the semi-finalists were quite good this time around and it’s hardly a surprise to us that it was such a close contest…) Good job, folks!
